Yes. As simple as it might sound: Your attitude really does matter!
“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” (Dr. Wayne Dyer)
I am a big believer that some of the most important lessons in life are often the simplest, most overlooked. My greatest realization is that any situation is far less important than your interpretation of it.
One of the most inspirational people currently alive, Dr. Wayne Dyer, once said “When YouChange The Way You Look At Things The Things You Look At Change”. This was probably one of the most empowering sentences I’ve heard in my life. I have the quote sticking next to my bathroom mirror, reminding me every single day that I create my own reality. Yes, our attitude is so important when you want to change your life (without actually changing anything around you).
Stop reading right now (after the next sentence) and close your eyes. Repeat after me: I AM THE CREATOR OF MY OWN REALITY! Do it again…
It takes practice.
So what? Did something inside you just shift? Don’t worry, if it didn’t, it took me a long time to breed it into my brain so that I started to believe it. Now I no longer believe its truth. I know it. I know that my attitude matters. And the difference between believing and knowing is that I start to fully embody and practice it on a daily basis, without the need to be constantly reminded of it (although I will leave the little note in the bathroom as it may influence someone else’s life one day).
So let me get into some more detail about this quote. When you change the way you see the world, when your intentions are positive and powerful, when you search only for the good, your life transforms into the amazing adventure it was designed to be. After all, anything and everything in life is all up to interpretation, right?
Where attention goes, energy flows.
In other words, there is no such thing as one reality; you create your own reality with the thoughts you think and the actions that follow. Someone once told me that the thing is just a thing. It does not change. But you have the power how you receive it. Here is an example from a typical day in my life (e.g. this morning): I wake up, journal, get on my yoga mat, find stillness before getting dressed and enjoying breakfast on my little balcony (in silence), grabbing all my stuff and leaving my apartment to drive to work. Driving takes me at least 1 hour. That is, 2 hours in total, every single day. So what do I do with all that time?
Here is what I used to do (before changing my morning routine around 360 degrees): I got up late, leaving to work in a hurry, getting really upset about the morning traffic, people honking around me, me honking back, listening to the radio making everything even worse by announcing the heavy traffic still ahead of me. I never arrived at work being able to put a (fake) smile on my face, not looking forward to finish work and have the same horrible situation on my way back home. Maybe I should stay a little longer to avoid the after-work traffic. Imagine following this pattern EVERY DAY. Same routine over and over again!
Now, this is what I do now: After my morning routine mentioned above, I get into the car, turn on my favorite podcast or listen to an inspirational audio book, and smile (btw. I also smile at all the drivers honking at me, which leaves them with a really confused look on their face, not understanding how I could stay so calm and happy with all the traffic around). I also always pack a smoothie, some snacks and a coffee to-go to have something nice on my way. Believe it or not, this has turned the most disliked part of my day into the best hour of the day!
Sounds simple, right? No, as with everything in life it isn’t, but you can consciously decide so and once you make the decision you have made the first step into the right direction. But for things to get better, you have to get better. Your perception, attitude and reality will always stay the same, if you don’t change the way you look at things. If you look at life as this giant tragedy and you’re always the helpless victim, guess what? You will remain that way.
You’re essentially enabling a self-fulfilling prophecy.
All the power you need is already inside you. You just need to be ready to believe it until you know it, until it gets so natural that you don’t even have to think about it.
